​US Secretary of State to visit Hanoi this week

United States Secretary of State Michael R. Pompeo is scheduled to pay a visit to Vietnam on July 8 and 9, as part of his five-country business trip this month.

The U.S. Department of State announced on Monday that Secretary Pompeo will travel to Pyongyang (North Korea), Tokyo (Japan), Hanoi (Vietnam), Abu Dhabi (United Arab Emirates), and Brussels (Belgium) from July 5 to 12.

His stay in the Vietnamese capital is slated for July 8 and 9.

During his visit in Pyongyang from July 5 to 7, the U.S. official will continue consultations and implement the forward progress made by President Donald Trump and Chairman Kim Jong-un in Singapore.

The secretary will meet with Japanese and South Korean leaders in Tokyo on July 7 and 8, discussing shared commitments to the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, and other bilateral and regional issues.

In Hanoi, Secretary Pompeo will hold meetings with senior Vietnamese officials to talk about bilateral and regional topics.

On July 9 and 10, the official will travel to Abu Dhabi, where he will confer with local leaders about ways to further strengthen the U.S.-UAE partnership.

The secretary will conclude his trip in Brussels from July 10 to 12, accompanying President Trump to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Summit.
