Vietnam is determined to join hands with the rest of the world in environmental protection efforts, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc said at the opening session of the sixth Global Environment Facility (GEF) Assembly in the central city of Da Nang on Wednesday.

Running from June 27 to 29, the sixth GEF meeting is attended by about 1,500 delegates from 183 countries and territories across the globe.

“Vietnam will not exchange environment for economic development,” PM Phuc asserted in his remarks.

The Earth, the home of the mankind, is facing severe impacts from environmental degradation, pollution, and climate change, he said, stressing that all nations will suffer tremendous consequences if no comprehensive measures is taken.

This issue is a challenge but also a chance for the humankind to review their development models, thereby making a change in their mindset and actions for an everlasting natural environment, the Vietnamese premier elaborated.

As a developing country, Vietnam has countered many problems caused by environmental degradation and climate change, he continued.

The Vietnamese government has added environmental protection to its socio-economic development plans, exerting all efforts for sustainable development.

The Southeast Asian country is focusing on implementing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs 2030) and its commitments at the COP-21 on climate change.

At the G7 Outreach Summit in Canada earlier this month, the PM hailed the important role and effective cooperation of the GEF, while pledging to work with the GEF in implementing a project on plastic waste-free ocean.

The Global Environment Facility was established on the eve of the 1992 Rio Earth Summit with the aim of helping tackle the planet’s most pressing environmental problems. Vietnam joined the GEF in 1994.

The GEF Assembly is composed of all 183 member countries and territories that meet every three to four years at the ministerial level.
